Sr. Manager Applications Development

Job Summary

Manager will be responsible for delivering IT projects in accordance with the schedule, budget, and quality requirement. Manager and team will support existing retail systems on a 24/7 basis. Position will manage the retail application development staff to allocate resources across priority projects and guide them in terms of schedule estimation and maintenance, design, integration, testing, and implementation. Position will focus on planning, scheduling, motivation, vendor management, and deliverables of systems surrounding the retail and store environment specifically including but not limited to; point of sale, secure payments, sales audit, customer engagement, store associate productivity, and inventory management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Review Store Systems project deliverables and ensure that all projects are conducted in compliance with General Nutrition's methodologies and standards.
  • Assign personnel to projects, based on priority, scope, and availability. Motivate staff to perform to their full potential by providing leadership, guidance, and growth opportunities. Set a good example for professionalism and work ethic. Take steps to build strong team connections within the group.
  • Manage the full project life cycle from inception through post implementation support. Manage project and program delivery to schedule, budget, and quality constraints. Enforce proper change management procedures, controls, and documentation in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley requirements.
  • Maintain understanding of and implement secure systems for all sensitive data in area of responsibility. Ensure the proper security measures are taken in system development, maintenance, and testing to protect sensitive data. This includes but is not limited to PCI compliance with the handling of payments, credit card, along with the appropriate handling of personally identifiable information (PII) for both customers and employees.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with end users in the business and other information technology professionals. Keep other groups informed of project status and key issues in a timely manner. Collaborate with business units on project roadmaps and strategy. Demonstrate subject matter expertise on business facing applications.
  • Effectively manage relationships with external vendors and form new ones as appropriate.
  • Find opportunities to fulfill business needs with modern, maintainable, cost effective techniques and technology. This will include vendor package integration and internal development. Assign staff to do the same as a growth opportunity when appropriate.
  • Enable and encourage innovation within the department. Look for opportunities to solve business process problems or enhance profitability through new methods. Encourage innovation in applications staff and continue to grow them as IT professionals.
  • Oversee and effectively manage resource demand. Work proactively with executive management to ensure activities with the highest impact and strategic alignment are pursued. Assist in business case development for initiatives.
  • Assume overall responsibility for the quality of production systems through measurements. Utilize Service Desk incident reporting for trends analysis and problem correlation. Identify opportunities to eliminate problems through root cause analysis. Strive to continuously reduce or eliminate the root causes of problems in the environment.
  • Establish and administer annual performance reviews, continuing education, and career development programs for each information technology staff member. Ensure continued development of staff members through ongoing feedback throughout the year.
  • Cross train staff members and keep each well rounded and cross functional in their skill set.
  • Assume responsibility for budget preparation and overall financial management of functional area.
  • Determine essential infrastructure needs and work with other IT teams to implement solutions.
  • Maintain awareness of software lifecycle versions and develop and implement roadmap for upgrades to maintain application portfolio.
  • Maintain proper staff coverage and systems support plans to manage effectively to SLAs.

Job Specifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or related discipline with 5-7 years of experience, preferably in a specialty retail environment.
  • Prior management experience is helpful.

Skills and Abilities

  • Project management skills – PMP certification is a plus, Agile certification is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of retail point of sale systems and their integration with enterprise support systems as well as omnichannel integration.
  • Knowledge and experience with secure payment systems and sensitive data protection.
  • Strong negotiation skills – must be able to work with, influence, and manage external vendors to perform to quality and schedule expectations. Ability to negotiate financial arrangements that benefit GNC.
  • Communications and influential skills – Be able to collaborate and influence other parts of the organization and across functional boundaries. Must be able to effectively present information, influence decision making, and respond to questions from stakeholders across the company.
  • Must have strong time management and planning skills. Be able to coordinate across multiple projects, prioritize the assignment of people, and be able to adapt to changes in requirements and in organizational priorities quickly in a fast paced environment.
  • Problem solving skills – must be able to make decisions quickly, in a methodical fashion using the available information. Be able to do identify multiple options and contingencies to address issues effectively.
  • Accountability – must assume responsibility for own actions and actions of the entire department with adherence to the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
  • Budgetary skills – must be able to manage software and vendor budget effectively. Be able to keep data current, organize the finances, present them effectively to management, and look for opportunities control costs while filling needs for the company.
  • Technical knowledge – must have experience with programming languages and database systems. Have a thorough understanding of the development process and the considerations of application function and performance.
  • Must have proficiency in building project plans while using project and portfolio management tools such as Gantt charts and Work Breakdown Structures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee staff of developers, business analysts, support analysts, and QA analysts who possess varying levels of skill and experience.
  • Build effective team culture. Set example as a proactive, collaborative leader.
  • Ensure full coverage and support of existing systems by the staff.
