Job Summary:

The Senior Director, Softgel Operations reporting to the Senior Vice President, Manufacturing, has overall operational and strategic responsibility for Softgel manufacturing operations. Expectations for this position include: meeting customer quality and service requirements, fostering a safe and productive work environment, evaluating and implementing resource changes necessary to efficiently supply customer requirements, and managing manufacturing methods, processes, products, and people to minimize cost. This role is also responsible for working cross functionally with Sales & Marketing, Quality, Product Development, Finance, Human Resources, IT and Manufacturing peer groups to achieve required business results. This operation includes approximately 285 personnel. The position manages a Capital Budget of approximately $1.3 million. Responsibilities also include annual Operating Budget management for over $17 million in direct resources in addition to the annual conversion of over $125 million in raw materials into approximately 5 billion units resulting in more than $170 million of Softgel related sales.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

STRATEGIC

  • Drive continuous improvement and proactive leadership achieve best practices in each area of responsibility
  • Provide leadership to the Manufacturing Managers and Supervisors to drive business performance
  • Key performance measures accountability: OSHA safety statistics, rejects/holds, direct cost per unit, yields, direct and material cost variances, schedule adherence, on time delivery, and audit results
  • Develop strategic business and capital plans and budgets/forecasts, including: annual product standards review, capital budget, staffing plan, processes, and purchase/installation of equipment

TACTICAL

  • Direct day-to-day activities related to staffing, safety, quality, cost, service, capacity, and compliance:
    • Ensures the safety of manufacturing areas and work practices in accordance with the site Health, Safety and Environmental program
    • Directs staff to execute department objectives; ensure effective utilization of resources through consistent performance management, and rewards and recognition practices in area of responsibility
    • Ensure continuity of managerial and specialized skills through robust employee development and succession planning
    • Provides leadership, guidance, and direction to manufacturing organization in alignment with corporate operations and quality goals and cGMP and corporate quality standards
    • Oversees the development, revision and accuracy of production plans; ensure key annual, monthly, and weekly manufacturing/delivery objectives are cascaded throughout the organization
    • Establishes key performance indicators, maintain and report applicable department metrics
    • Manage the conversion process to meet customer delivery, throughput, cost, quality, safety, and financial performance requirements with a focus on driving continuous improvement
    • Proactively identifies, assesses, and mitigates operational and organizational risks; escalate key risks and issues
    • Direct staff and capital resources to ensure customer volume requirements are met:
      • Partners with senior manufacturing management to design organizational and managerial structures that support site mission and strategic objectives
      • Supports development and management of annual department budget and quarterly forecasting processes
      • Partners with senior leadership team to identify department goals and objectives in support of site’s strategic goals and values
      • Partners with corporate product planning to develop department long range planning
      • May represent department and site in scoping and planning process/product development projects; define and present manufacturing capacity and capability including compliance considerations, and estimate timelines for implementation
    • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, cGMPs, and other international regulations:
      • Interfaces with external regulatory agencies via written and verbal communication; review regulatory filings and participate in facility tours and key discussions during inspections
      • Ensures robust department training plans are maintained and role based training is established; ensure staff is sufficiently trained to perform their job responsibilities
      • Ensure manufacturing instruction set and production records reflect practice, are aligned to cGMPs and corporate standards, and executed records are reviewed in a consistent and timely manner
      • Ensures robust quality event management systems and that deviations/investigations are resourced and completed on time
      • Maintain current and accurate control documents
    • Attract, retain, motivate and lead a flexible workforce ensuring appropriate training and communication:
      • Work with direct reports closely and develop them to help them assume more independent accountabilities for the execution of the quality management process
      • Provides coaching to peers/others to help improve their knowledge for manufacturing operations, GMPs and quality systems
    Recognizes and rewards employees to promote operational excellence and employee morale

Job Specifications:

  • Ability to function effectively at both strategic and tactical levels

  • Directly lead and manage exempt-level staff of 15 or more and indirect staff of approximately 300
  • Minimum

    • >10 years manufacturing operations experience in highly regulated environment
    • >5 years operational management experience

    Preferred

    • >5 years experience leading cGMP manufacturing operations teams specific to batch/semi-continuous processing
    • >5 years experience leading cross-functional operations teams including Quality, Manufacturing Technical Support, Facilities and Engineering, and/or Validation
    • Four-year degree in related discipline
    • Preferred

      • Advanced degree in operational management, engineering or related technical program
      • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Training and/or Certification

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage a diverse work force
  • Organization & communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment
  • Capable of developing and administering an operating budget
  • Strong creativity skills a must with ability to analyze and initiate new ideas and opportunities
  • Strong product, process, and materials knowledge is required
  • Expertise in GMP facilities and equipment design/engineering concepts
  • Project Management expertise
  • Strong negotiation and management skills - must possess the ability to interface and influencing all levels of the organization and across functional boundaries; Must be able to effectively present information, influence, persuade and effectively respond to questions from various stakeholders
  • Planning & Organization –strong time management and planning skills to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously while adapting to changes in business requirements in a fast-paced environment
  • Problem Solving/Decision Making – must be able to take a hands-on approach to proactive decision making
  • Teamwork – must be able to lead inter-company and cross-functional teams to meet objectives
  • Technical/Functional knowledge – must possess comprehensive knowledge of best in class strategic manufacturing practices, supplier performance and supplier management processes
  • Talent Management – coach and develop the procurement organization ensuring talent is in place to execute the strategy
  • Analytical Skills – must possess strong self-sufficient technical problem solving and decision making skills
  • Accountability – must take responsibility for own actions and results with adherence to the highest standards of ethics and integrity
